The Science to Policy Accelerator (S2PA)

Empowering the next generation of science policy leaders

What is S2PA?

S2PA is a program offered by Evidence for Democracy for early-career researchers across Canada to receive specialized training in public policy, positioning them as key knowledge brokers and emerging leaders at the science-policy interface.

In February 2022, we welcomed 25 early-career researchers in our first cohort of S2PA.

Why should you participate?

The COVID-19 pandemic has put science in the spotlight like never before, illustrating the critical role that science has to play in public policy decisions. More than ever, scientists need to be able to understand and participate in the many different processes that contribute to public policy. But to do so effectively, they need access to skills-based training and opportunities to put those skills into practice.

And just as importantly, in the face of pressing issues like climate change, COVID-19, the opioid crisis, and societal inequality, it is increasingly important that policy-makers can access and use scientific evidence. Researchers can play an important role in this by honing their skills in policy and communication, and expanding their engagement with public policy.

This is where S2PA comes in.

What can you expect in this program?

S2PA participants gain foundational knowledge in science policy and governance, and then apply these concepts to specific forms of policy engagement, such as writing briefing notes and participating in pre-budget consultations.

Throughout the program, S2PA participants learn from established experts across the public and non-profit sectors, and connect with a talented cohort of early career researchers across Canada.
