May 13, 2025 – Ottawa, ON — Evidence for Democracy is disappointed by today’s federal Cabinet announcement, which represents a setback for science and evidence-informed decision-making in Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government has rebranded the role of Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry as the Minister of Industry – effectively removing the dedicated science portfolio and eliminating the most senior champion for science in Parliament.

“This decision suggests that science is not a priority for this government,” said Sarah Laframboise, Executive Director of Evidence for Democracy. “Stripping science from the Cabinet sidelines the vital role that fundamental research plays in advancing health, protecting the environment, and building a safer, more prosperous Canada.”

While mission-driven and industry-focused research is valuable, Canada cannot afford to abandon support for fundamental research. This is the backbone of innovation, laying the groundwork for transformative discoveries that drive long-term economic prosperity and keep Canada globally competitive. These research environments also train our next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, equipping them with advanced skills needed to fuel Canada’s innovation economy and tackle the complex challenges of today and tomorrow. 

“At a time of unprecedented attacks on science and research in the United States, Canada has an opportunity to lead by example,” said Laframboise. “That leadership must start with clear, visible representation of science in government.”

We will await the public release of ministerial mandate letters, where we hope to gain more clarity on how and where science will fit into the government’s priorities. At a time when science is critical to addressing complex, urgent challenges, from climate change and public health to innovation and economic resilience, this absence sends a troubling signal.

Science is a fundamental pillar of a safe, informed, and prosperous future for all Canadians. Now more than ever, Canadians need a strong and central voice for science in government.
