Overheard at the Standing Committee on Science and Research: Government of Canada’s Graduate Scholarship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programs

Evidence for Democracy has prepared a summary of the witness testimonies provided during the Standing Committee’s study of the Government of Canada’s Graduate Scholarship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship programs.

On May 4, 2023, the Standing Committee on Science and Research started its study of the Government of Canada’s Graduate Scholarship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programs. As per an earlier motion adopted by the Committee on February 14, 2023, this study explored “the Government of Canada’s graduate scholarship and post-doctoral fellowship programs, in particular the freezing of funding amounts, the funding system and the impact on graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.”

Below, you can find a summary of what we overheard at the Standing Committee on Science and Research throughout the study. The following meeting summaries were prepared by four volunteers (see below), and reviewed by Evidence for Democracy’s Farah Qaiser.

  • Jade Chan (a PhD student in the Department of Molecular Genetics at University of Toronto);
  • Eashan Halbe (a Master’s student at the University of British Columbia’s Air Pollution Exposure Laboratory, under the Experimental Medicine program);
  • Tess Osborne (a recent Master’s graduate from the University of British Columbia, and will be starting soon as a Research Associate in Vancouver, BC.);
  • Tim (Yuan Chao) Xue (a Research & Innovation Manager for Genome British Columbia).

You can find the Standing Committee’s upcoming meetings and completed work here.
