We found that nearly 18% of Members of Provincial Parliament in Ontario have a credential related to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or medicine

Elected officials from different fields, such as business, agriculture and the trades, all bring valuable perspectives to our democracy. Experts in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or medicine (STEMM) are no exception, and can help ensure that science and evidence become a priority in public policy.

During the 2022 Ontario provincial election, we partnered with Elect STEM and nine E4D volunteers to review the credentials held by Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) candidates. Of 482 candidates, we found that 25% (124) had a STEMM-related credential.

Following the election, we found that 17.7% (i.e., 22 of 124) of MPPs have a STEMM-related credential. When we compare this to 2021 data collected by Elect STEM, this is an increase of almost 7%. Learn more below!Learn more below!
