How is COVID-19 Impacting Graduate Students in Canada?
In this webinar, the Toronto Science Policy Network (TSPN) will discuss key findings from their recent report: The Early Impacts of COVID-19 on Graduate Students Across Canada. Sivani Baskaran (President) and Frank Telfer (Vice-President) will outline opportunities for action for supervisors, student groups, institutions, and governments seeking to support graduate students.
Founded in July 2018, TSPN is a student-run science policy group based at the University of Toronto. In the early days of the pandemic, graduate students, including members of TSPN, faced tremendous confusion and uncertainty. Graduate students are not alone in feeling the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have less influence, and are, in many cases, more vulnerable when it comes to funding and health and wellness. TSPN developed this survey to better understand the impact of COVID-19 on graduate students. This survey was designed by students, for students, and included questions on various aspects of graduate studies, including research, health and wellness, and future prospects.
Graduate students are the life force of discovery and innovation in Canada, providing the critical ideas, talent, and labour necessary for the majority of academic research. The graduate students of today are the leading innovators of tomorrow. But in order to realize this potential, it is critical that decision-makers take action to mitigate the adverse impacts of COVID-19 on graduate students, and help students thrive.
