Interim Executive Director

Evidence for Democracy (E4D), Canada’s leading science advocacy non-profit, seeks an Interim Executive Director to lead the organization for one year, with the possibility of continued employment.

We are seeking an Interim Executive Director for a term of one year (parental leave replacement, starting September 1, 2022, and ending September 30, 2023), with the possibility of continued employment. The incumbent will bring an ability to advance the transparent use of scientific evidence in government decision-making through E4D’s existing projects, and experience in non-profit fundraising. Competitive candidates will bring professional excellence, exceptional communication and management skills, and an ability to engage with scientists, elected officials, public servants, foundation and grant partners, and donors. Applicants must have knowledge of the science and public policy landscapes in Canada. 

Organization

Evidence for Democracy is Canada’s leading voice for science, evidence-informed public policy, and transparent decision-making. Since launching in 2012, E4D has built a national reputation as a non-partisan and non-profit organization promoting the transparent use of evidence in public policy and decision-making. E4D leads independent research, skills training and issues-based campaigns to foster public and political demand for science.

Scope of Work

Strategic Direction: 

The Interim Executive Director will be responsible for working with E4D staff and the Board of Directors to continue to advance the strategic direction of the organization. Through engagement with the science and policy communities, the Interim Executive Director will help build public and political demand for evidence-informed policy- and decision-making, ensure government scientists’ right to speak freely about their work, and increase the capacity within the expert community to contribute to science advocacy, public policy, and public engagement.

Operational Planning and Management:

The Interim Executive Director will provide direction on all aspects of E4D’s work with guidance from the Board of Directors. This will include direct oversight, management, and execution of E4D’s research projects, training programs, and campaigns. The Interim Executive Director will manage E4D’s staff (3-4 people) and a network of volunteers, while creating a collaborative, productive, and inclusive team environment. 

Fundraising and Communications:

E4D competes for funding from foundations, organizations, and government partners to support its work. The Interim Executive Director will continue to build on the development and execution of fundraising plans and garnering support from individual donors, partner organizations, and foundations. As the primary spokesperson for the organization, the Interim Executive Director is the public face of E4D, and will regularly give media interviews and public talks, organize events, and strengthen strategic relationships within and outside of government.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of the science and research landscape in Canada
  • Experience in organizational leadership, ideally within the non-profit sector
  • Track record in fundraising from institutional partners (government, foundations) and donor stewardship, including individual giving and prospecting 
  • Experience in policy-relevant research or research-based advocacy
  • Exceptional communications skills, and comfort with public speaking and media relations
  • Capacity to motivate and inspire staff, the expert community, and the broader public in pursuit of E4D’s mission
  • Experience in building relationships with government officials (elected and non-elected)
  • Ability to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)
  • Fluency in French an asset but not mandatory

Location

The E4D office is located in Ottawa, Ontario. Options for remote work may be considered. 

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience (scale: $65,000-$80,000). This is a full-time position (37.5 hours/week) and may require national and international travel up to 10% of the time.
