Director of Research and Policy

Evidence for Democracy (E4D), Canada’s leading science advocacy non-profit, seeks an Director of Research and Policy to lead and manage research projects and outreach initiatives.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, highly skilled and motivated professional to improve decision-making and government accountability in Canada.

We are looking for a senior-level professional, who displays energy and professionalism in a participatory manner, as well as a passion for bridging the gap between science and policy, to contribute to our team. Applicants must have experience in leading policy research and/or analysis, a broad understanding of the Canadian political landscape, strong communication skills, and a proven ability to interact with various stakeholders (including scientists, government officials, policymakers, funders, and donors).

Evidence for Democracy (E4D) is Canada’s leading voice for science, evidence-informed public policy, and transparent decision-making. Since launching in 2012, E4D has built a national reputation as a non-partisan and non-profit organization promoting the transparent use of evidence in public policy and decision-making. E4D leads independent research, skills training and issues-based campaigns to foster public and political demand for science.

Scope of Work

Research and Program Delivery (40%)

Along with the Executive Director, the Director of Research and Policy will be responsible for planning and executing research projects, campaigns and other initiatives. This includes direct oversight, management, and often execution of E4D’s research projects and campaigns. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and lead new research projects, campaigns and other initiatives within the scope of E4D’s strategic and annual plans;
  • Provide input into annual planning documents prepared by the Executive Director, including an annual plan and annual budget;
  • Ensure each project has a clear work plan; and
  • Meet regularly with staff to ensure appropriate progress is being made on each project.
Government Relations and Advocacy (30%)

Along with the Executive Director, the Director of Research and Policy will take part in lobbying activities and lead government relations to advance E4D’s mission of promoting evidence-informed decision-making in public policy. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with elected officials and policymakers;
  • Monitoring legislative developments, preparing policy briefs and advocacy materials;
  • Collaborating with partners, advocacy groups and coalitions to support key initiatives.
  • Advising the Executive Director and staff on government relations strategies.
Fundraising (20%)

The Director of Research and Policy will work with the Executive Director to implement E4D’s fundraising plan, and explore various strategies to grow financial support from individual donors, organizations and foundations. This will include developing relationships with key donors, reporting fundraising outcomes, and submitting grant applications to support E4D activities.

External Relations (10%)

Along with the Executive Director, the Director of Research and Policy will be a public spokesperson for the organization. This may involve participating in media interviews, giving public talks, attending events, drafting opinion pieces, and cultivating strategic opportunities to build new relationships.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong experience in leading policy research and/or analysis, with a proven record in a policy or research-based advocacy setting
  • Demonstrated science/research literacy
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, with a proven ability to deliver a persuasive message
  • Tech savvy, familiar with online collaboration tools (such as Google Suite, Zoom, etc.)
  • Exceptional independent problem-solving skills
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, quickly changing work environment
  • Strong leadership: proactive at management and communication
  • Excellent time management skills; ability to set priorities
  • Familiar with the issues surrounding science policy, research and politics in Canada
  • Ability to regularly travel within Canada approximately once per month
  • Ability to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)
  • French fluency is an asset
  • Graduate degree (research-based) is an asset


The E4D office is located in Ottawa, Ontario. Options for hybrid work will be considered.


We offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience ($60,000 – $70,000). This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position, which may require travel up to 10% of the time. We provide full-time employees an annual Health Care Spending allowance of $2,000.

Start date and term

Full-time; 1-year contract with possibility of extension. Preferred start date July 8, 2024.
